Artisanship and craftsmanship are at the core of British and English interior design. With the profound mark of the Industrial Revolution and Royal sponsorship, artisans in the UK have long enjoyed trade customers in the interior design space. In this article inspired by architect Richard Parr – you're welcome to read his exclusive interview – we will talk about how to introduce artisan elements into a client’s home – no matter the style or brief agreed upon.

The brands spoken about have been curated by Interior Architect Lori Bolon, founder of Portaire, and Richard Berold, our Head of Curation and previously interior designer too. We hope their trained eye can inspire yours too. If you'd like to recommend us a new brand headed by craftsmen, send us an email.

How can I introduce artisan interior design products?

Incorporating artisan interior design products into your design allows you to express your client's style and support traditional craftsmanship. You can do this by choosing artisan-made furnishings, focusing on organic materials and traditional methods, and collaborating with artisan interior designers to create a bespoke, authentic, and timeless living space.

Art, the ultimate artisan product

The hand-made artisan interior design look cannot be achieved without the expert eyes of artists. Make sure to check out artists in your community, and to attend galleries to find the perfect piece for your client. Whether you want a classic landscape painting or an abstract masterpiece, you'll find it. Plus, you'll support important members of the artisan community! Here are some of our favourite artists, in a list format.

Handmade hardware

When it comes to artisan interior design, even the smallest details matter. Handmade hardware, such as cabinet knobs, drawer pulls, and door handles, can add a touch of craftsmanship to your interior design. Opt for quality materials, like brass or bronze, that are expertly crafted by artisans. These unique details will elevate your interior design, creating a cohesive and polished look.

Perfectly crafted tiles and stone

Tiles and stone are essential elements in interior design, and artisan craftsmanship can take them to the next level. Consider using artisan tiles and stone to create stunning design features in your living room, kitchen, or bathroom. These materials are expertly crafted, providing unique textures, patterns, and colors that add depth and interest to your interior design. Organic materials, such as natural stone, or hand-painted ceramic tiles, can add contemporary design elements while still maintaining the artisan aesthetic.
